The Metzger Animal Hospital HART fund helps clients who have exhausted all financial resources but are unable to pay for necessary medical or surgical treatment for their pet. The fund is maintained through public donations by those who understand the bond between pets and their owners and wish to help those who may be in a difficult financial situation. The HART fund was started in 2013 by Dr. Fred Metzger and Stephanie Carfley. Following the death of her beloved yellow lab, Cuchulainn, Stephanie and Dr. Metzger began talking about the need for a “fund” for those who could not afford treatment for their pets. Throughout Cuchulainn’s treatment, Stephanie would often hear individuals talk about how they would like to do more for their pets, but did not have the financial ability to do so. Often, these pets were beloved family members who had gotten them through personal tragedies, illnesses, and other life changing events. Out of these talks, an idea was born. With Stephanie’s legal knowledge, Dr. Metzger designed the HART Fund, which stands for Helping Animals Receive Treatment. All applicants are required to complete a Financial Eligibility form. If it is determined that a legitimate need exists and sufficient money is available in the fund, Metzgers may use this money as payment on behalf of the individual. Eligibility is subject to the discretion of management and may not be available for all situations.
